The Logo
The word Perot Rumah refers to the kitchen which is akin as the stomach of the house.
Within this confine space the womanfolk gather to prepare food, pick up tips and skills, share recipes making the kitchen the centre of household life and activity in a Baba house.
Paper Cutting is a folk art with origins in China from the 6th century. These intricate paper cut-outs, used by Chinese as decorations, have motifs with auspicious symbols for prosperity and happiness.
Nyonyas would create these paper patterns with just a pair of scissors and red paper, potong kertair merah. These cut-outs would be traditionally pasted on prayer offerings; and also on gifts during weddings, birthdays and Chinese New Year.
The Perot Rumah logo maintains this tradition, welcoming everyone with auspicious greetings of joy and prosperity.
Lloyd Matthew Tan, author of two cookbooks, Daily Nonya Dishes and More Daily Nonya Dishes, specialises in documenting the lesser-known dishes, Laok Hari Hari, that were cooked daily at Peranakan homes.
He grew up on his parents’ home-cooked Nonya food and was motivated to learn cooking when his father passed away in 2011.
Realising that a recipe would not be able to survive when not cooked and enjoyed, he runs cooking workshops and provides private dining at his residence.
An active contributor at the forefront of Peranakan culture on social media, he is passionate about sharing his extensive knowledge acquired from his parents and grandmothers.
